Hosted by the Spanish Red Cross from June 4th to 7th, the Irish Red Cross joined approximately 20 other National Societies in a Climate Action Workshop held in Madrid. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and Climate Centre organised this event to underscore the IFRC commitment to climate action. Senior management, including the vice president, actively participated in discussions.
The workshop was divided into two main segments. During the first two days, different partners shared their experiences in integrating climate action into their National Societies. This collaborative environment fostered the exchange of ideas and the brainstorming of new initiatives. A notable highlight was the focus on youth involvement, which demonstrated how young people across Europe are being empowered to become champions of climate action.
In the latter half of the workshop, presenters conducted training sessions aimed to guide Red Cross National Societies on their climate action journeys.

The training covered various pathways for engagement, including:
- Increasing climate change awareness through youth empowerment, communications campaigns and advocacy;
- Integrating climate risks into existing work;
- Addressing the most urgent needs of communities to help them anticipate, absorb, and adapt to climate shocks;
- Incorporating environmental sustainability across all sectors i.e. green response, and climate change mitigation.
Numerous tools and ideas were shared during the workshop, equipping the Irish Red Cross with valuable resources to engage with the global priority of Climate Action effectively.
This workshop not only reinforced the importance of climate action within the Red Cross Red Crescent network but also highlighted the innovative approaches being taken to address climate challenges. The Irish Red Cross is now better prepared to implement these strategies and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.
