Irish Red Cross has published its 2023 Annual Report, showcasing a year of challenges and transformative humanitarian action. In 2023, the Irish Red Cross responded to multiple global crises, natural disasters, and continued its extensive refugee support programmes, including for displaced Ukrainians, while delivering life-saving assistance in Ireland and abroad.
Key 2023 Highlights
- Global Humanitarian Response: Supported relief efforts for crises in Ukraine, Türkiye-Syria earthquakes, and floods in Libya and Morocco, raising nearly €10 million. The Gaza appeal alone generated over €600,000, helping fund vital supplies and services.
- Refugee Support: Accommodated 10,019 Ukrainians in 3,955 Irish homes through the Host Accommodation Programme, supported by the Irish public’s generosity. The programme also aided Afghan and Syrian refugees. Efforts to expand trauma support services for displaced Ukrainians continue in 2024.
- Domestic Impact: Responded to severe flooding in Ireland, distributing €7.4 million through the Small Business Flood Relief Scheme. Over 70% of new volunteers in 2023 were under 43, with strong participation from Gen Z.
Irish Red Cross Secretary General Deirdre Garvey reflected on the year, saying, “2023 demonstrated our unwavering dedication to humanitarian values amid global crises. The continued support from the Irish public empowers us to keep delivering hope and assistance both locally and globally.”
Chairman Pat Carey emphasized, “The generosity of the Irish people enables us to maintain our role as the ‘always there’ humanitarian organisation, driven by over 3,000 volunteers nationwide.”
