How we are supporting this crisis

  • Search and Rescue Support: volunteers are deployed to support local response efforts of Mandalay, Sagaing and Naypyitaw. They are providing First Aid and pre-hospital care, prioritising life-saving measures.
  • Emergency Shelter Assistance: distributing items for affected families, including blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits.
  • Restoring Family Links: mobilised to reconnect separated families in coordination with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

The humanitarian crisis in Myanmar was already severe. There is no time to wait. Years of conflict and climate related disaster have led to mass displacement and extreme poverty for the people of Myanmar. The devastating earthquake has caused widespread destruction, collapsing multiple buildings, and complicating rescue efforts. The full extent of the destruction and official casualty figures remain unclear.

In Myanmar, the National Society of the Red Cross is coordinating response through its branches and volunteers and liaising with a task force of the global humanitarian movement.

Our hearts are with all of the people of Myanmar and Thailand who are impacted by these devastating earthquakes. People in Myanmar were already experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis and this disaster further compounds the existing vulnerabilities and increases the urgency for aid.” says Deirdre Garvey, Secretary General, Irish Red Cross. “The Myanmar Red Cross society is on the ground and providing an emergency response. They urgently need our support.”
