Finding Peace: Natalia’s journey from Kharkiv to healing in Ireland

Natalia, a resilient mother of twin girls, sought refuge in Ireland after fleeing the devastating shelling of Kharkiv. Natalia’s family came to Ireland marked by deep emotional trauma, especially one of the daughters, who had a strong emotional reaction to the bombing. They were welcomed by an Irish family who provided much-needed shelter and support during this difficult time. In 2023, Natalia attended the first women’s therapeutic group, ‘Mind Body Medicine’, supported by the Irish Red Cross at the Ukraine Community Centre Rathmines, with the support of Irish therapist Heidi Jackson.
Under Heidi’s guidance, Natalia began her journey towards healing. The therapy sessions proved to be a turning point; after several weeks, she no longer needed the medication that once helped her sleep. Heidi emphasised the crucial connection between a mother’s emotional state and her children’s well-being, helping Natalia find the calm she needed to support her family. In addition, she learned valuable self-support techniques, benefiting herself and her daughters.
The women’s circle, formed during the therapy sessions, was also an important part of Natalia’s transformation. This community, along with Heidi’s care, played a significant role in positively changing Natalia’s psychological and emotional state.

Narrative Exposure Therapy
Ukrainian Community Programme continues to deliver ‘Narrative Exposure Therapy’, a 10-week programme offered to Ukrainians dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Each session lasts for one hour per week, with clinical oversight by five Ukrainian therapists who had their qualifications recognised in Ireland with support of the Red Cross.
To date, the Irish Red Cross is the only organisation in Ireland to offer a service in the Ukrainian language. This is significant because research indicates that involving an interpreter in a one to one session can negatively effect the patient’s outcome and the quality of the relationship between patient and therapist.
Initial results are promising, showing a substantial improvement in PTSD symptoms from the first week to the programme’s conclusion. The Irish Red Cross continues to gather evidence of the impact of this innovative approach.
